Washing Against Waste

Washing Up Kit for sustainable events

Have you ever been to an event and noticed how much waste is produced? All those single-use coffee cups, plastic cups, straws, crockery and cutlery? It can be pretty overwhelming, particularly when it is a 'green' or 'eco' event.

In 2013 Earth Carers were involved in running a washing up station at the fantastic St Luke's EcoFair in Mosman Park. Organisers wanted to reduce waste and asked food vendors not to use disposable packaging such as coffee cups and straws. Ceramic coffee cups and acrylic glass were provided to beverage vendors along with milk crates to put dirty cups in. Earth Carers volunteers collected items for the washing up station. A display about the problems of disposable plastic raised awareness about the issue.

We have now put together a washing-up kit to lend out to councils, schools and community groups in the western suburbs. It contains 50 standard barista-size ceramic cups, acrylic glasses and everyhting you need to wash up for an event. Details of the kit, how to borrow it and how it works can be found on this flyer.

You might also like to borrow our H2O to Go portable water bottle refill stations to  make your next event waste-free and more sustainable. Say NO to single-use plastic.
